Having a Basset Hound

We have a Basset Hound named Millie. She is the perfect dog for our family. Here is a post from the Pioneer Woman on owning Bassets that is SO true!

Before You Own a Basset Hound

I do have to add a couple things. While they might seem harmless (ok, they ARE harmless) and seem like they are missing out on EVERYTHING that goes on around them while sleeping, they pay very close attention. You don't dare leave them for long periods, or they will get upset at you (as in will ignore you) . They also can smell meat from forever away and are very social (as in visits the neighborhood if giving the chance). They have got pathetic down pat with their droopy eyes and all that extra skin. They are also the messiest eaters ever, and sit down when eating. They are more then willing to have the 4 year old boss them around. When the 2 year old comes near, they lay down and hold still, flinching a little, but knowing that as soon as he is past, all will be well. They love to clean up peanut better off the chairs after lunch and if the chairs are left out will get up on the table to see if there is anything left for them. One big problem with this, they can't get back down! They love with their whole hearts and it doesn't take much to make their day.
So, despite their wonky personalities (maybe its just Millie):
All in all, a very lovable dog.

  1. I agree. The only thing is that they look like they are missing out on everything AWAKE or ASLEEP.
